Garage Doors: Repair or Replace?

Garage Door Guy Talks About Various Garage Door Problems & Their Solutions
Garage Door Guy - Should You Repair or Replace Your Garage Door?

No one likes the question, “Would you prefer to repair or replace?” But unfortunately it is a question that all homeowners will face at one time or another with regards to their garage door.

So what do you do when the time comes for the garage door to decide it no longer wants to open? Do you decide to replace at a (potentially) breathtaking cost, or do you decide to repair as a cheaper alternative?

There are times when garage door repair makes sense. For instance, if your garage door opener is under 15 years old, and the repair cost is less than half of the price of a new one, it may be smarter to repair. However, consider that if something breaks again in the next year and you have another repair bill for that opener, you will probably be at the cost of a new opener.

Always consider that there are other parts to malfunction or break, and that the older the garage door opener, the higher the chance of something happening.

The same is true for your garage door, except that there are twice as many parts. If your garage door is over 13 years old and is showing signs of age, it may be time to consider replacing. If you have 3 repairs over a 3-year time period, it is likely you would be at the cost of a new door, except that you would still have an old garage door that is falling apart.

Consider also that most service companies make more money off of repairs than they do replacements. A repairman may be at your house several time for repairs, but replacements are a one time deal where you probably won’t have to have anyone back out for a number of years.
