Many homeowners enjoy decorating their home for different holidays and their garage becomes a part of that process. However, knowing how to decorate a garage door safely is important for preventing damage to the door and causing a safety hazard. It’s also important to not decorate any garage door needing repair. Your door needs to be clean and in proper working condition before attaching anything else to it.
How to Decorate a Garage Door Safely
When putting decorations on the door –
Anything you place on the door must be incredibly thin and lightweight. Anything you put on your garage door should:
- Be 1/4 inch or thinner
- Be a pound or lighter
- Only cover one panel by itself
Therefore, we recommend using magnets to secure any decorations on the door. You can also use vinyl decals but adhesives can sometimes be hard to remove without damaging the paint. As we said above, make sure each decal only covers one panel to prevent it from getting caught between panels.
When hanging lights –
If you want to hang lights to decorate your garage door, we recommend using clips instead of nails. The only lights we recommend hanging on the door itself are small, battery powered, and hung on a single panel with an adhesive clip such as these by Command.
For a larger light display, you can hang the lights from the gutters above the garage or around the outside trim of a garage door.
