If you need to program a garage door opener, the good news is most new openers use the same process for programming or resetting garage door remotes. Better yet, it’s a fairly quick process.
All you’ll need is a ladder and your garage door remotes or other openers you’re programming!
How to program your new garage door opener remote
Grab a ladder tall enough (generally, six feet is enough) to reach your garage door opener and place it behind the garage door opener so you can access the control panel.
Open the rear flap or the light cover to find the control panel. You should be able to tell which piece you need to open as it will look like it detaches.
You should now see a button labeled “Learn.” Hold the button down until the LED light next to the button starts flashing.
Now, press (don’t hold this time) the main button on your garage door remote within 30 seconds. If you have done everything correctly, you will see the garage door opener light blink. If you missed the 30-second window or these steps didn’t work, simply try the above process over again.
If the light flashed, the process should have worked. Close the panel and test out the remote!
How to program your new garage door keypad
You’ll follow the same instructions as above, except you’ll have to climb down from the ladder to program the keypad.
So, get up on a 6-foot ladder and open the rear flap or light cover to find the control panel. Open it and find a button labeled “Learn.”
Hold the button down until the LED light next to the button starts flashing. You’ll have 30 seconds to program the keypad.
Climb down and go enter the code you want to use into your keypad. Press enter and watch for the garage door opener light to blink.
If the light blinked, that means the opener has the code and is ready to use! Close the control panel and then test your keypad.
How to erase all codes from your garage door opener
If you would like to reset your garage door opener, grab a ladder and place it behind your garage door opener motor to access the control panel. The panel will be either be the light cover or a panel on the back of the opener.
Open the panel and press and hold the “Learn” button for approximately six seconds. The indicator light will go out and all previous codes will be erased.
Then, follow the appropriate steps above to program your new openers or keypad.
How to program your vehicle’s HomeLink system with your garage door opener
Have a ladder placed behind your garage door opener and have the control panel open so you can see a button that says “Learn.”
Now, get in your car and press and hold the two outside HomeLink buttons for approximately 20 seconds until the indicator light flashes rapidly. You may have to have your ignition turned on for this process.
Hold the hand-held remote you have want to to pair with HomeLink 1-3 inches away from the HomeLink. At the same time, press and hold both the hand-held remote’s main button and the HomeLink button you wish to program. Release when the indicator light starts flashing rapidly.
Now, get to your ladder and press and hold the “Learn” button on your garage door opener for about one second and release.
Return to your car within 30 seconds and press and hold the HomeLink button you programmed two times for approximately two seconds. The garage door opener should have been activated on the second button press. Now test it out!
